The summer sun, what we have of it, can be hazardous to adults, let alone the delicate skin of our little ones. While the English weather leaves a lot to be desired sometimes, we can be treated to mini heatwaves if we’re lucky, and we need to be prepared for this so that our skin, and the skin of our babies, is protected as much as possible. Children’s skin is even more important to look after when the sun is high in the sky, and it’s especially important to educate them from a young age so that they can grow up knowing how to take care of themselves in the sun. Adopting good practices from a young age is essential, and there are plenty of ways in which you can prepare your baby ready for their stints in the sunshine this summer.
Clothing
Ensure that your baby has plenty of summer clothing that is light, loose fitting and cotton. You don’t have to spend a fortune on their summer wardrobe (and considering how quickly they’ll grow out of it all, you probably won’t want to spend a lot anyway), so head to somewhere like George at ASDA to kit them out in the latest trends. Not only will you find some gorgeous clothes at George, but you won’t have to spend a fortune, either.
Make sure that they also have a sunhat to keep the sun off their heads, and out of their eyes, too. UV swimwear is also recommended if they’re going to be in and out of the water.
Suncream
Bear in mind that babies skin is far more sensitive than it will be as they grow, so you need to ensure you cover them in suncream that will suit. Choose one with a high SPF factor and make sure that the cream you use allows their skin to breathe, to avoid heat rash and prickly heat. If you’re heading on holiday and will be introducing them to the swimming pool, remember to top up the suncream as soon as they come back out of the water, and keep topping it up throughout the day – even when there’s cloud cover.
Accessories
Whether you’re at the seaside, at the park or in your own back garden, you need more than just clothing and suncream. The sun can be extremely strong on hot days, and accessories such as sunglasses and a parasol can come in really handy. If you’re out and about, a parasol attached to their pushchair can help too. Always make sure that there is shade available for them, and make use of it as much as possible. Babies love to be out in the sun just as much as we do, but we need to ensure they are protected from its harmful rays.
Don’t hide away from the sun – just because you have a baby with delicate skin doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy it. Protect your baby properly and you can enjoy any glimpses of sunshine with peace of mind this summer,

Fab post! I must admit that I generally do hide my kids from the sun, purely as I don't quite know what is for the best x
